Etymology

[edit]

First attested as corvele in 1331. Etymology uncertain. Proposed derivations from Latin corbele (type of wooden beam), goor (swamp) and a compound of korf (basket) and lo (light forest) do not match well with the oldest attestations of the toponym.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈkɔr.vəl/
  • Hyphenation: Kor‧vel

Proper noun

[edit]

Korvel n
