From Middle High German krā, krāe, krawe, from Old High German krāwa, kraja, krāha, from Proto-Germanic *krēǭ (compare Dutch kraai, English crow, Plautdietsch Krauj), from Proto-Indo-European *ger- (“to scream, cry, creak”).
