Etymology

From Middle High German krām (merchant tent; wares), from Old High German krām (merchant tent; tent cloth). The semantic development is “tent cloth” → “merchant tent” → “shop” → “wares” → “stuff”. Cognate with Dutch kraam (booth, stall). More at crame.
