Etymology

From Old High German creviz, Central Franconian form of krebiz, from Proto-Germanic *krabitaz. Cognate with German Krebs, Dutch kreeft, Swedish kräfta. The word has [ps] instead of [fs] in most modern dialects of Central Franconian, which must be due to dissimilation, possibly reinforced by Standard German influence (we still find kreeftze in the 15th c.). The regular Luxembourgish vocalism would be [iə̯]; the vowel may have been shortened and later relengthened (as in fiicht etc.).
