Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as limmail in 1230-1236. Perhaps a compound of Old Dutch *lin (flexible) and male (sack, area with low elevation, swampy land). Unlikely to be derived from a compound of Proto-Germanic *hliþa- (slope, incline) and *maþla (moot, gathering place). Formerly an independent village.

See also Limburgish Lummel.
