Etymology[edit]

First attested as Hlottingen wolde and Lwttingen wald in 1511. Calque of West Frisian Lippenwâlde, derived from a compound of Old Frisian Lippinga (a surname) and wald (marsh forest, swamp forest). Compare Lippenhuizen.
