Etymology[edit]

Hypercorrection of earlier *Lolé, attested in Medieval Latin as Lole, from Mozarabic *al-Olea. The first element is from Arabic ال (al-, the). The second element is either from Arabic عليا (ʿulyā, hill) or from Latin olea (olive tree).
