Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as Luchterveld in 1899. Calque of West Frisian Luchtenfjild, a compound of an unclear first element and fjild (field). The first element may be Dutch Low Saxon luchter (bundle of reeds used as kindling) or a toponym *Lucht. Alternatively, the toponym may be a compound of lucht (air) and veld (field), used here as a reference to the open expanse of fields around the hamlet. May have originally been the name of an inn.
