Etymology[edit]

Coined in 1843 by Dr. Carl Schaffhäutl, from Byzantine Greek μαργαρώδης (margarṓdēs, pearl-like), from Ancient Greek μάργαρον (márgaron, pearl); see μαργαρίτης (margarítēs).
