Etymology[edit]

First attested as mersum in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Marsum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian *mersk (low-lying swampland) and hēm (home, settlement) or from the dative plural form of *mersk. Compare Marsum.
