Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as merkelbeke in 1283. Compound of an unclear first element and beek (“brook, stream”). The first element has been interpreted as Old Dutch Markilo (“a personal name”), a compound of mark (“demarcated area, unorganised communal land”) and lo (“light forest”) (compare Markelo), and as a hydronym *Markilo (derived from mark (“border”)).
