Etymology[edit]

First attested as messau in 1178. Etymology unknown. Proposed derivations have included a derivation from a compound including Proto-Germanic *ahwjô- (land next to a watercourse), a derivation from a hydronym, or from Latin mansus (house, homestead) or mesuagium (house).
