[edit]From French Montreux, from Medieval Latin monastēriolum under influence from Old French Mont- (“Mount”) in numerous other placenames, from monastērium (“monastery”) + -olum (“-ole: forming diminutives”), q.v. Doublet of Montreuil and Monthureux.
