There are two alternatives for the family name:
- Variant of the English and (deprecated template usage) [etyl] French surname Morant, of unknown origin (morant "cubic" has been suggested).
- Anglicization of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Irish Ó Mórain (“descendant of a person named Big”) or Ó Mughráin
