Either from Arabic *نَاخِرَة (*nāḵira, “a derelict place”) from the verb نَخَرَ (naḵara, “to gnaw, to pierce, to bite”); or from *نَاهِرَة (*nāhira, “a place endowed by a river”), from نَهْر (nahr, “river”).
