Either from Arabic *نَاخِرَة (*nāḵira, a derelict place) from the verb نَخَرَ (naḵara, to gnaw, to pierce, to bite); or from *نَاهِرَة (*nāhira, a place endowed by a river), from نَهْر (nahr, river).
