Etymology[edit]
First attested as aade in 1556. Derived from an inflected form of nieuw (“new”), te (“at”) and the hydronym Aa, derived from Middle Dutch aa (“watercourse, river”). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oud-Aa.
