Etymology[edit]

First attested as nye schoten in 1408. Calque of West Frisian Nijskoat, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian nia (new) and scâta (piece of land which juts upward). The element nij was added to distinguish the settlement from Oudeschoot.
