Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as nya hascha in 1496. Borrowed from West Frisian Nijehaske, probably derived from a compound of Old Frisian nia (new) and *haske (a species of grass). The element nij was added to distinguish the settlement from Oudehaske.

The neighbourhood is named after the village.
