Potentially attested as nuthere in 1297, attested with certainty as nuchtere and nuthare in 1385. The toponym appears to be a compound of an uncertain first element and Old Dutch heri (sandy ridge). The first element may be nut (use, benefit) or refer to the presence of nut-bearing trees near the settlement. Compare Nutter.
