Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as Ospel in 1612 and 1621. Difficult to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Potentially a compound of a variant of Middle Dutch espe (“aspen, Populus tremula”) and lo (“light forest”) or a contraction of oost (“east, eastern”) and peel (“swamp, marsh”).
See also Limburgish D'Oospel.
