Etymology[edit]

First attested as hoerne cum duabus capellis in 1315. Calque of West Frisian Aldhoarne, derived from a compound of Old Frisian ald (old) and hern (corner of a levee). The element âld was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuwehorne.
