Etymology[edit]

First attested as mordum in 1245. Derived from a compound of oud (old) and presumably a compound of Proto-Germanic *mari (lake) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. The element âld was added to distinguish the settlement from Nijemirdum.
