Noun

Rechabitism (uncountable)

  1. (obsolete) Total abstinence from alcohol, in the context of the Rechabite movement.
    • 1841, “Life Assurance”, in The New British and Foreign Temperance Magazine, page 332:
The institution of Rechabitism needs no commendations from us; its objects are already well known and appreciated.
    • 1911, Richardson Campbell, Rechabite History: A Record of the Origin, Rise, and Progress of the Independent Order of Rechabites, Salford Unity from Its Institution on August 25th, 1835, to the Present Time:
It appears evident that the principles of Rechabitism are not generally understood, its objects not appreciated, its moral tendencies and powers not known. Hence arises the general apathy which now exists and which makes Rechabitism appear of little moment in developing the principles and requirements of the great Temperance movement.
