From Proto-Germanic *liudiz, from *hโ‚lewdสฐ- (โ€œman, peopleโ€). Akin to German Leute, Old Norse lรฝรฐir (โ€œpeopleโ€) (whence Icelandic lรฝรฐur), Russian ะปัŽะดะธ (ljudi).
