From Proto-Balto-Slavic *der(ˀ)-, from Proto-Indo-European *derH-. Cognate with Lithuanian dérti (to tear, to peel) (Žemaitian dialect), 1sg. derù, as well as Ancient Greek δέρω (dérō, to flay), English tear.
