Etymology

An s-extension of *duti (“to inflate, to swell”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewh₂- (“to smoke”). Technically, formed as *duxъ (“breath, whiff”) +‎ *-ati. Related via schwebeablaut to *dvoxati (“to breathe heavily”).
