An s-extension of *duti (to inflate, to swell), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewh₂- (to smoke). Technically, formed as *duxъ (breath, whiff) +‎ *-ati. Related via schwebeablaut to *dvoxati (to breathe heavily).
