From the compound of *gwɨd- + *bod (to be), earlier *wibbutā < *widbutā, from Proto-Celtic *wid-, *windeti (to know, to see) + *butā, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (to see, to know) + *bʰuH- (to be, become).
