Proto-Dravidian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Nostraticists have connected this word to Proto-Indo-European *pl̥h₁- (city, fortification) (Ancient Greek πόλις (pólis, city), Sanskrit पुर (pura, city)) and Proto-Ugric *palɣɜ (village) (Hungarian falu, Mansi па̄вэл (pāwəl)), deriving all from Proto-Nostratic *pʰal ("village, settlement").

Noun[edit]

*paḷḷi

  1. family, household
  2. (later Dravidian) village, hut
