Etymology

[edit]

Has been proposed to derive from Proto-Uralic *kixe- with +‎ *-ttadak.[1] Alternatively, per Saarikivi (2020), a borrowing from Proto-Slavic *čiti-[2]. albeit this is less certain if the actual form is *čьtiti (which would result in a short -i- in Finnic) or *čьstiti. An older theory supposed a borrowing from Proto-Balto-Slavic *geyd- (compare Lithuanian giedoti and Latvian dziedāt), but this etymology suffers from issues.[3]
