Etymology

Borrowed from either Proto-Germanic *stūraz (whence German stur, Dutch stoer) or from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stʰuHrás (compare Sanskrit स्थूर (sthūra, “big, bulky, thick”)), in either case ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂-uh₂-ró-s.

Not directly related to the more widespread Proto-Germanic *stōraz (whence e.g. Swedish stor), which has *ō and not *ū as the root vowel.
