[edit]From *baba- + *-lōną, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰa-bʰa-, perhaps a reduplication of Proto-Indo-European *bʰā- (“to say”), or a variant of onomatopoeic *baba- (“to talk vaguely, mumble”), or a merger of the two.
