From Proto-Indo-European *dʰrugʰ-o-m, thematicized from *dʰréwk-s ~ *dʰrugʰ-és, from *dʰrewgʰ- (to deceive) +‎ *-s. Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰrúkš (lie, deceit), and perhaps Proto-Celtic *drukos (bad).
