Etymology

    From Pre-Germanic *ǵʰĺ̥h₃-to-m (gold), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (green, yellow). Compare Proto-Slavic *zolto, Proto-Baltic *želtas, whence Latvian zelts.[1] Disputed relation to *geldaną (to pay).
