Proto-Germanic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Probably ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂p- (“seize”), possibly through a root *kobuǵos (compare Russian ко́бец (kóbec, “falcon”), Polish kobuz, Latin capys, capus (“bird of prey”) (if not loaned from Etruscan), Albanian gabonjë).
