From Proto-Indo-European *Hrewp- (to snatch). According to Kroonen the verb is a merger of:[1]

  • An intensive formation equivalent to *reufaną (to tear) +‎ *-janą.
  • A denominal formation equivalent to *raubaz (robbery) +‎ *-janą.
