From Proto-Indo-European *Hrewp- (“to snatch”). According to Kroonen the verb is a merger of:

• An intensive formation equivalent to *reufaną (“to tear”) +‎ *-janą.
• A denominal formation equivalent to *raubaz (“robbery”) +‎ *-janą.
