Etymology

[edit]

Of unknown origin. Assuming an alternative proto-form *trudlą, Sievers has suggested the term to be a nominal formation from *trudaną (“to tread, step on”), that is, "one who steps (on others)", while Orel tentatively suspects a relation to *trewą (“tree”) instead.[1]
