Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *wel-, *welw- (hair, wool, grass, ear (of corn), forest). Alternatively from *gʷʰel-t-, whence also Proto-Celtic *gʷeltis (wild) (Welsh gwyllt (wild), Irish gealt (lunatic)).
