Etymology
[edit]From *wr̥trás (“shield, cover, obstacle”) + *gʰan- (“to slay”) + *-ás, from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to cover”), *gʷʰen- (“to strike, slay”) and *-ós (agentive suffix), respectively. Literally, "the destroyer of obstacles".
