Traditionally etymologized from *šь̀d- +‎ *-lъ < *xьd-, from *xod- (motion, movement), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sad-, from Proto-Indo-European *sod-, from *sed- (to sit). Modernly etymologized as back formation from *vyšьdlъ, from *vys (out) and *jьdlъ (gone).
