Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *suk-é-ti, from *sewk-. Cognate with Lithuanian sùkti (to twist), Proto-Germanic *swanhaną (to swing) (whence English sway, Dutch zwaaien (to sway, wave)).[1]
