Etymology

From of an earlier *vьrzti. Formally equivalent to Proto-Indo-European *wr̥ǵʰyéti (to tighten), whence Proto-Germanic *wurgijaną (to strangle).

  1. alternative form of *verzti (to tie)
  2. (regionally) to sneak (in Southwestern Slavic)
