Etymology

Possibly related to Proto-Indo-European *ǵr̥h₂nóm (grain). Possibly a borrowing from Iranian. Per Derksen, cognate with Avestan 𐬓𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬥𐬀 (xᵛarəna, food).[1]
