Unknown; presumably from Proto-Germanic *mawaz, *mawiz (clean) +‎ *-ī (adjective suffix), possibly related to Proto-Slavic *mỳti (to wash), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *myewh₁- (to move about).[1]
