Proto-West Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown; presumably from Proto-Germanic *mawaz, *mawiz (“clean”) + *-ī (adjective suffix), possibly related to Proto-Slavic *mỳti (“to wash”), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *myewh₁- (“to move about”).[1]
