Etymology 1

Bücherregale

Of unknown origin. Perhaps derived from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German riōle or reōle ("rack, frame, ditch").[1] Compare Dutch regel. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the form Regal existed alongside the form Real.
