Etymology[edit]

First attested as richeim in 822-825. Borrowed from West Frisian Reitsum, in turn derived from a compound of a variant of Old Frisian Reitse (a personal name) or Proto-Germanic *rîkja- (powerful, mighty) and hēm (home, settlement).
