Etymology[edit]

reißen +‎ Brett. Compare also English write (to inscribe, engrave, imprint) + board. The older meaning of reißen refers to the consequences of using a tool for engraving or drawing, causing little cracks on a surface of choice, which, among other things, could also have been used as means of writing.
