Etymology

sauer (sour) +‎ Gurke (cucumber) +‎ Zeit (time), thus “pickled-cucumber season”, that is the summer, when pickled vegetables are prepared. The word is now sometimes used to refer to other periods of the year, however. Compare Danish agurketid, Icelandic gúrkutíð.
