Etymology[edit]
First attested as schyldum in 1453. Etymology unknown. Potentially derived from a compound of Old Frisian Schelte (“a personal name”) and hēm (“home, settlement”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier form of the Frisian name.
