  • (Zeeland) First attested as in pago scaldis in 970. Derived from the dative plural form of the hydronym Old Dutch Scalde (Scheldt). Compare Nieuweschild and Oudeschild.
  • (Groningen) First attested as schuwum in 1371. Potentially derived from the dative plural form of Old Frisian *skûve (uncovered barge, ferry).
